Santa Maria della Scala

The building began as a hospital around 1090 and for centuries served pilgrims, orphans, and local patients. It played an important role in European medical history before changing its function in the late 20th century.

The frescoes show how the hospital functioned and what role it played in the community. You see paintings of people caring for the sick, teaching, and supporting others, revealing what daily life looked like inside these walls.

The building sits directly across from Siena Cathedral, making it easy to locate. Multiple staircases and elevators allow you to explore different levels at your own pace.

Today the building still houses active lay brotherhoods that carry forward traditions from the hospital era. These groups keep practices alive that are hundreds of years old.
