Chiesa di San Pantalon, Baroque church in Dorsoduro, Venice, Italy
Chiesa di San Pantalon is a Baroque church in Dorsoduro with an unfinished brick facade located near Campo Santa Margherita. The interior features a tall nave with artworks covering the walls and ceiling to create an immersive visual space.
The church originates from the 12th century but underwent major reconstruction between 1668 and 1686 to acquire its Baroque form. This renovation also reoriented the building to face the new Campo San Pantalon.
The church takes its name from Saint Pantalon, a physician and martyr venerated in Venice since medieval times. Visitors pass through to see the artworks and pause as is customary at many houses of prayer throughout the city.
Visitors should know the church has limited opening hours and is best visited in early morning or afternoon periods. The location sits in a residential part of Venice, so it is worth being respectful and aware of prayer times when planning a visit.
The ceiling painting is one of the largest canvas artworks ever created and comes from Giovanni Antonio Fumiani, who worked on it until he fell from scaffolding in 1694. The work displays religious scenes on a grand scale and fills nearly the entire vault of the church.
