Monte Rite, Mountain summit in Province of Belluno, Italy
Monte Rite is a mountain summit in the Province of Belluno, in the northeastern Dolomites of Italy. It is reached by an unpaved military road from Passo Cibiana, which may be closed to vehicles depending on the season.
During World War I, the Italian army built a fortification on the summit, along with a road and defensive structures to control the surrounding passes. After the war, these installations remained and were gradually repurposed over the following decades.
The Messner Mountain Museum at the summit displays exhibitions about Dolomite geology and mountaineering traditions. Visitors discover how climbing culture shaped the region and why these peaks hold deep meaning for the people who live nearby.
The unpaved road to the summit is generally closed to vehicles from late October to early July, so it is worth checking conditions before heading up. Those who choose to walk should bring warm and waterproof gear, as weather on the upper slopes can change quickly.
The old military fort at the top was converted into one of the highest museums in Europe, now home to the Messner Mountain Museum Dolomites. From the outside, the building still looks like a fortification, with no obvious sign that it houses a museum inside.
