Giovanni Battista Piranesi designed the square in the late 1700s, incorporating maritime elements to honor the site's connection with the Knights Templar and Hospitaller.
The square represents the headquarters of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and contains the church of Santa Maria del Priorato with its art collection.
Two security guards maintain constant surveillance of the area, which visitors can reach by walking up Via Santa Sabina on the Aventine Hill.
Through the wooden door's keyhole, visitors can observe a perfect alignment that frames Saint Peter's Basilica dome between rows of cypress trees.
