Aveto Valley, Natural valley between Liguria and Emilia-Romagna, Italy
The Aveto Valley runs through forested mountains, with the highest peak being Monte Maggiorasca at around 1800 meters, while the Aveto River flows through it. The river follows its natural course downward and eventually joins the Trebbia River.
The region came under Roman control during ancient times when Consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus fought against local tribes near Monte Penna around 166 BC. This military campaign marked the beginning of Roman authority over this mountain area.
The valley is part of the Four Provinces area, where local communities still play traditional music using regional instruments like the Apennine pennywhistle and accordion. These sounds are woven into daily life and celebrations throughout the local towns.
The upper section of the valley includes two main towns, Rezzoaglio and Santo Stefano d'Aveto, while the lower section is made up of Ferriere, Cerignale, and Corte Brugnatella. Knowing these towns helps you navigate and understand the different areas you will encounter.
Within the Aveto Natural Park lie protected areas such as the Agoraie and Moggetto reserves, which hold the Fir Lake and its special ecosystem. This lake is a quiet spot with its own particular nature that you rarely encounter elsewhere.
