Neugersdorfer Hütte

Neugersdorfer Hütte is a mountain refuge situated at 2568 meters in Prettau, providing beds and meals for hikers and climbers. The building sits on steep terrain and functions as a waypoint on established trekking routes across the high alpine area.

The refuge was built in 1905 and came under control of the Italian Financial Guard after World War I. The agency used it as a border monitoring post in this remote mountain region.

The refuge brings together Italian and German-speaking mountaineers who share meals and stories during their climbs. This mingling reflects the bilingual character of South Tyrol, visible in daily interactions at high altitude.

Access is via marked mountain trails that require several hours of hiking from lower elevations. Summer months are the best time to visit, when paths are safe and the facility operates normally.

The refuge is operated by the Italian Financial Guard, making it the only mountain shelter in Italy run by a law enforcement agency. This unusual arrangement gives it a distinct character and operational style quite different from standard mountain huts.
