Reichenspitze, Mountain summit in Zillertal Alps, Austria

Reichenspitze is a mountain summit in the Zillertal Alps located between Salzburg and Tyrol, standing at 3303 meters. Three mountain huts sit on surrounding slopes and serve as base points for people attempting to reach the top.

The first ascent was made in 1856 by an unnamed farmer from Prettau in the Ahrntal, who climbed the east face from the southeast; that route is rated UIAA III near the summit. The first touristic ascent followed on 16 July 1865, by Peter Haller of Gmünd with the foresters Anton Peer and Josef Unterrainer from the Schönachtal.

The peak gives its name to the Reichenspitze Group, whose highest summit it is at 3,303 m. Its neighbours along the arêtes are the Gabler (3,263 m), the Richterspitze (3,052 m) and the Wildgerlosspitze (3,278 m). The summit cross is reached by the normal route from the Plauener Hut, which crosses the Kuchelmooskees glacier.

Climbing this peak requires mountain walking experience and some technical climbing ability, particularly on the eastern face below the summit. Visitors need proper equipment and should check weather conditions, since conditions at this altitude change rapidly.

The east-facing slopes below the summit offer challenging climbing passages that demand specific mountaineering skills from climbers. This section remains demanding for many hikers and requires more technical ability than the standard approach route.
