Foscagno Pass, Mountain pass in Lombardy, Italy.
Foscagno Pass is a mountain pass in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, sitting at 2,291 meters (7,518 feet) and linking the Bormio valley to Livigno. The road crosses an open ridge with rocky terrain on both sides, and the landscape is bare and exposed, especially above the treeline.
The pass was used as a trade route long before any paved road existed, as it offered one of the few practical crossings between the Valtellina and the isolated plateau of Livigno. It was only in the 20th century that the road was improved enough to allow regular traffic throughout most of the year.
The pass sits on the boundary between Valtellina and Livigno, two areas with their own traditions and ways of life. Livigno's status as a customs-free zone begins just beyond the pass, and crossing it gives a clear sense of moving from one world into another.
The road can close during heavy snowfall in winter, so checking current road conditions before setting out is a good idea. In summer the crossing is generally straightforward, but weather can change quickly at this elevation, and drivers should be ready for that.
Rain falling on the northern side of the pass eventually drains into the Danube river system, while water on the southern side flows toward the Po. The line dividing these two major European river basins runs directly along the ridge that the road crosses.
