Rifugio Fanes, Mountain hut in Al Plan, Italy
Rifugio Fanes is a mountain refuge situated at 2062 meters (6,765 feet) in the Dolomites, located within a protected natural park. It offers a terrace overlooking the Tofane Mountains and provides lodging with meals for hikers and mountaineers.
The refuge was built in 1928, marking the beginning of its role in Alpine mountaineering history. Inside, vintage equipment and historical photographs document how mountaineering evolved in the region over the following decades.
The refuge serves traditional Ladin dishes like canederli dumplings and strudel, paired with South Tyrolean wines. Guests gather at shared tables to enjoy meals together and share stories from their mountain adventures.
The site is best visited from June through October, when trails and routes are free of snow and passable. Visitors should prepare for changing weather and bring appropriate gear, as the high elevation brings sudden storms and rapid temperature shifts.
The facility is powered by solar panels, demonstrating an early example of sustainable energy use in a high-altitude setting. Visitors hiking the trails around the refuge can spot marmots moving freely through their natural mountain home.
