Puezhütte, Mountain hut in Calfosch, Italy.
Puezhütte is a mountain hut at 2,475 meters in the Puez-Odle Nature Park, in the Dolomites of South Tyrol, Italy. It offers beds and meals to walkers passing through on the high trails above the valleys of Calfosch and the surrounding area.
The hut was built in 1889, making it one of the older shelters in the Dolomites. It was originally set up to support climbers who were beginning to explore these peaks at a time when the mountain paths here were still being mapped.
The hut sits in the heart of the Puez-Odle Nature Park and draws walkers who share meals at long wooden tables after a day on the trails. Staff greet guests in German, Italian, and Ladin, the three languages spoken in this corner of South Tyrol.
The hut is only reachable on foot from the valleys below, so plan enough time for the ascent before dark. Overnight guests should book in advance, as space at this altitude is limited and demand is high in summer.
The name Puez comes from the Ladin language and refers to the high plateau on which the hut stands, a name that locals have used for centuries before any trail was marked here. The plateau beneath the hut is known among geologists for an exceptional number of marine fossils embedded in the rock, left by an ancient sea that once covered this area.
