Frasassi Caves

The Frasassi cave network extends over 5000 meters through limestone formations, containing extensive mineral deposits, chambers, and underground passages with varied geological features.

A team of speleologists from Ancona, directed by Giancarlo Cappanera, discovered this natural underground system on September 25, 1971, leading to public access in 1974.

Two religious structures near the entrance, the Sanctuary of Holy Mary under the Rock from 1029 and the Neoclassical Tempietto del Valadier from 1828, reflect local traditions.

The cave maintains a constant temperature of 14 degrees Celsius throughout the year, requiring visitors to bring warm clothing for the guided tours.

Scientists conduct research in these caves, including chronobiology experiments where individuals stayed underground for extended periods to study human biological rhythms.
