Cristo della Minerva, Marble statue of Jesus in Santa Maria sopra Minerva, Italy
The white marble statue depicts Jesus Christ standing with crossed arms, holding symbols of his passion near the main altar.
Commissioned in 1514 by Metello Vari, Michelangelo completed this 205-centimeter sculpture in 1521 after abandoning an initial version due to marble defects.
The sculpture represents Christ after resurrection, combining religious symbolism with Renaissance artistry through detailed anatomical execution and classical poses.
Located on the left side of the main altar in Santa Maria sopra Minerva church, the statue remains accessible during regular church visiting hours.
A bronze loincloth was added to the originally nude figure in 1546, while the first abandoned version was discovered in 2000 at San Vincenzo Martire.
