Tomb of the Scipios, Archaeological site on Via Appia in Rome, Italy.

The tomb features six galleries carved into tufa rock with sarcophagi arranged along walls and within niches of the underground structure.

The sepulcher, constructed in the 3rd century BC, served as the burial site for members of the distinguished Scipio family during the Roman Republic.

The sarcophagi contain inscriptions detailing the accomplishments of each family member, providing direct evidence of Roman commemorative traditions.

Visitors must make reservations in advance and wear protective helmets to enter the underground chambers of the ancient family tomb.

The original sarcophagus of Lucius Cornelius Scipio Barbatus, the first family member buried in 298 BC, now resides in the Vatican Museums.
