Champoluc, Mountain resort in Ayas Valley, Italy
Champoluc is a settlement located at 1568 meters elevation in the upper Ayas Valley, surrounded by Pennine Alps peaks at the Swiss-Italian border. The area includes ski lifts and cable cars that link it to neighboring valleys.
The area was inhabited in ancient times before Romans took control around 25 BC and established trade routes through the valley. Later, Walser settlers from Switzerland arrived and shaped the region for centuries to come.
The village buildings reflect Walser heritage with their stone ground floors and wooden upper stories, a building style that settlers brought centuries ago. You can see this distinctive construction throughout the settlement today.
The settlement is best explored on foot with clear pathways between buildings and leading up to the cable cars. In winter you can dress warmly and use the many ski runs, while summer offers hiking trails across the mountainous terrain.
The valley is home to one of Italy's oldest inhabited Walser communities, where the language and traditions of Swiss mountain settlers remain alive today. Visitors can experience these ancient connections through the local dialects and customs.
