Palazzetto dello Sport, sports venue in Rome
The Palazzetto dello Sport is an indoor arena in Rome that opened in 1957 and is topped by a distinctive white concrete dome approximately 61 meters across. Inside, the space features high ceilings and open areas designed to accommodate basketball, volleyball, boxing, and other sports, with seating for around 3,500 spectators for basketball events.
The building was constructed in the late 1950s as a sports venue for the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome and opened its doors on October 1, 1957. During the Olympic Games, it hosted basketball competitions and played a key role in establishing Rome as a modern sports center after World War II.
The name Palazzetto dello Sport means "small sports palace" and reflects its role as a gathering place for the local sports community. For Romans, this building has been a place where people come together to cheer for their teams and participate in competitions since it first opened.
The building is easy to find on foot since its distinctive white dome rises above the surroundings and serves as a landmark. The venue includes dressing rooms, first-aid facilities, and medical services for athletes and visitors, making it convenient to attend events or simply walk by and explore the area.
The concrete dome was assembled from 1,620 prefabricated concrete pieces that fit together like a puzzle and were installed in just 40 days. This rapid construction method was a sign of technical innovation and makes the building a remarkable example of Italian engineering from that era.
