The collection began in 1895 as part of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, a musical institution established through a papal bull in 1585.
The exhibition includes the Tuscan Strad violin from 1690 and the Medicean quintet, crafted for Grand Prince Ferdinando de Medici.
Visitors receive personal digital assistants for audio tours featuring detailed information about twenty selected instruments in the collection.
The museum maintains an open-air laboratory where professional luthiers work on instrument restoration and maintenance in front of visitors.
