Territorial Abbey of Montevergine

Territorial Abbey of Montevergine is a monastic complex situated on a mountain near Mercogliano, comprising churches, monastic buildings, and a modern basilica. The site spreads across multiple levels along the mountainside, featuring architecture from various periods.

A Benedictine monk founded this religious complex in 1120 on a mountain where ancient temples once stood. The site was officially consecrated soon after and developed into an important center of monastic life.

The sanctuary houses a venerated Byzantine image of the Black Madonna that has drawn pilgrims seeking blessing and comfort for centuries. For many believers, this place serves as a spiritual destination for personal prayer and reflection.

Visitors can reach the abbey using a cable car from Mercogliano, which operates year-round with regular service up the mountainside. This cable car is the primary way for tourists and pilgrims to access the site.

The abbey palace was built in the 18th century with an unusual octagonal design that stands out from typical monastic buildings. This architectural feature makes the structure a noteworthy example of Baroque design within a religious setting.
