Rifugio Luigi Cibrario, Mountain hut in Usseglio, Italy.
Rifugio Luigi Cibrario is a mountain refuge at 2,616 meters (8,583 feet) in the Graian Alps, positioned in the Rio Peraciaval basin of northern Italy. The building sits in a high alpine setting with access to hiking trails and climbing routes in the surrounding terrain.
The refuge was established in 1890 on the initiative of Count Luigi Cibrario, with its opening ceremony in 1891 attended by prominent mountaineers of that era. This founding was part of the early expansion of Alpine climbing support in Italy.
The refuge brings together mountaineers and hikers who gather to share their experiences and dine communally in a relaxed setting. Volunteer management by experienced alpinists shapes the welcoming atmosphere and traditions of the place.
The refuge provides 34 beds during summer operations from July to September, with a smaller winter room accommodating 8 people in off-season periods. Access is best managed during daylight hours, as mountain weather can change quickly in this high altitude location.
The refuge uses a turbine system that harnesses the 100-meter waterfall from the Peraciaval Lake outflow to generate its own electricity. This self-sufficient approach shows how mountain refuges can rely on natural water flow for their power needs.
