Valchiavenna is an alpine valley north of Lake Como, where the Mera and Liro rivers meet near the town of Chiavenna. The valley stretches between high mountains and links several small settlements in a green, narrow landscape.
The valley saw continuous settlement starting in Etruscan times and served as a key trade route between Italy and northern Europe. This position made it a strategic passage, especially through the Splügen Pass, which connected the region northward.

The Acquafraggia waterfalls feature twin cascades that plunge roughly 170 meters through multiple drops into the valley below. This striking sight is visible from within the valley and draws visitors who want to experience the raw power of falling water.
