Sottomarina, Coastal district in Chioggia, Italy
Sottomarina is a coastal district in Chioggia that extends as a peninsula into the Venetian Lagoon with a long sandy beach. The sand contains minerals such as augite, quartz, silicates, and mica, which give the beach its particular appearance.
The site was known as Clodia Minor in ancient times and was abandoned after the War of Chioggia in 1379. Reconstruction began in the late 1600s when people gradually resettled the peninsula.
The narrow streets of Sottomarina have names rooted in local expressions, reflecting the enduring influence of two prominent families: Boscolo and Tiozzo. These street names reveal how deeply these families shaped the community's identity and daily language.
The beach is well served with numerous beach establishments and accommodations along the waterfront promenade for easy access. The area works best during warmer months when all facilities are fully operational and the beach is most welcoming.
The sand composition and constant air circulation create natural conditions that people have long sought for their potential therapeutic qualities. These features give the beach a character distinct from other coastal destinations.
