Monte Casto, Mountain summit in Province of Biella, Italy
Monte Casto is a mountain summit in the Province of Biella in northern Italy, reaching 1,138 meters in elevation. The peak stands between the Cervo Valley and Strona di Mosso Valley and forms a key watershed dividing the surrounding drainage areas.
The mountain became significant during early industrialization as large-scale reforestation programs took place across the region. The planted forests suffered heavy damage during warfare in the 20th century.
The Monte Casto Trail, established in 2006, evolved into a qualifying event for the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, attracting runners from across the region.
Access to the summit follows multiple forest paths, with main routes starting from farmland near Tavigliano and the Trabbia area in Callabiana. Visitors should expect changing terrain and weather conditions at elevation.
The western slope holds dense coniferous forests, an unusual feature for the Biella region where these trees do not grow naturally. This distinctive woodland owes its presence to deliberate planting efforts from past decades.
