Palazzo dei Consoli

The Palazzo dei Consoli is a Gothic building constructed on a large platform built into the hillside, featuring a prominent bell tower and a loggia with views over the town. The interior contains multiple rooms arranged for various administrative functions that served the medieval government.

Construction began in the 14th century under an architect from Orvieto, establishing it as the seat of the official courts and the General Assembly of the People. The medieval city relied on this building to house its most important institutions.

The palace houses the Civic Museum, where the bronze Iguvine Tablets with ancient Umbrian inscriptions are displayed alongside medieval objects from the surrounding region. These finds help visitors understand the different historical layers that shaped this area.

The building is accessed via a large outdoor staircase from the piazza, which requires some effort due to the slope of the ground. The interior is well-lit and the rooms are arranged in a straightforward layout, making it easy to navigate.

The medieval structure featured an integrated plumbing system that was remarkably advanced for its time. This technical achievement demonstrates that the building was planned with careful attention to comfort and functionality.
