San Marziale, Medieval church in Gubbio, Italy
San Marziale is a medieval church in Gubbio with a semicircular apse built from materials taken from Roman structures. Its interior features a barrel-vaulted roof that extends across the full length of the nave.
The church began in 1365 as a Benedictine convent and received approval from Bishop Giovanni Morlaco to be built next to Sant'Andrea church. In 1761 the building underwent significant modifications when a new choir was added.
The church displays three notable altarpieces, including a 1553 work by Benedetto Nucci showing the Madonna and Child with Saints Andrew and Martial. These artworks reflect the religious importance this place held for Gubbio's community.
Access to the church is via a curved stairway leading to the entrance, which was modified during the 1761 choir addition. Visitors should note that stairs lead into the interior and the location sits at an elevated level.
The church received the relics of Saint Victoria in 1646 from Rome's Sant'Agnese catacombs. These sacred remains were later moved during the 1967 renovations.
