Abisso di Trebiciano, Cave system in Trieste, Italy.
The Abisso di Trebiciano is a cave system in Trieste that descends about 329 meters through a series of vertical shafts. At the deepest point stands the Lindner Cavern, where the Timavo River flows through the underground space.
In 1841, engineer Anton Friedrich Lindner led a five-month project exploring this cave while searching for drinking water sources for Trieste. This discovery marked the start of scientific study of cave systems in the region.
This cave has long been a place where researchers explore and learn about the underground world. Scientists have worked here to study how underground rivers and rock formations behave.
Visiting requires advanced climbing skills and proper safety equipment because you must use metal ladders to descend and climb back up. Access is free but only available on specific dates each month.
The underground Timavo River experiences extreme water levels during floods, and during a 1915 event the water rose about 115 meters high. This phenomenon was documented by researcher Eugenio Boegan and shows the power of hidden water forces.
