Acilia, Residential district in Rome, Italy
Acilia is a residential district in Rome stretching along the Via Ostiense between central Rome and the coastal area of Ostia. The neighborhood connects the urban core with the eastern coastal settlements in a transitional zone.
The district underwent major transformation in the 1940s when it received a large population displaced by urban redevelopment projects in other parts of Rome. This resettlement shaped the modern structure and character of the neighborhood.
The area takes its name from the Roman Acilii family who owned estates in this region during antiquity. This heritage remains part of the local identity and connection to the past.
The Rome-Lido railway line connects the area to Roma Porta San Paolo station and provides access to the broader city transportation network. The flat topography makes the district easy to navigate on foot.
The area was historically tied to agricultural activities and rural ways of life before transforming into a modern residential center. This rural past remains visible in the landscape and some older structures throughout the district.
