Santa Maria del Carmine, Pavia

Santa Maria del Carmine, Pavia, Gothic parish church in Pavia, Italy.

Description

Santa Maria del Carmine is a parish church with Gothic architecture measuring 80 meters in length and built on a Latin cross plan. It features three naves flanked by sixteen square chapels positioned along its sides.

History

Construction started in 1374 when Duke Gian Galeazzo Visconti commissioned the building with Bernardo da Venezia as architect. The work was completed in 1461 after nearly nine decades of building.

Culture

The church serves as a significant place for devotion to Blessed Bernardine of Feltre, whose remains have rested here since 1811. Visitors encounter numerous 15th-century frescoes adorning the transept, created by artists working in the regional tradition.

Practical

The church is located at Via del Carmine 11 and can be easily spotted by its tall bell tower, which rises about 75 meters. The tower serves as a helpful landmark for getting oriented in the Pavia area.

Did you know?

The facade displays an unusual division into five vertical sections separated by six pilasters. This arrangement blends Romanesque and Lombard Gothic design elements in a way that reflects the architectural traditions of the region.
