Palazzo Malaspina, Neoclassical palace in central Pavia, Italy.
Palazzo Malaspina is a neoclassical residential palace in central Pavia with two contrasting facades and a formal interior layout. The entrance on Via Malaspina features a wrought iron gate flanked by decorative columns and marble busts that welcome visitors into the building.
The building began as a 16th century structure that was later completely transformed when Marquis Luigi Malaspina di Sannazaro commissioned its renovation. This major restructuring was finished by 1794 and established the palace in its present neoclassical form.
This residence was home to an influential family for generations, and the rooms still reflect how they lived and organized their domestic spaces. The furnishings and decorations show the tastes and priorities of the people who occupied these rooms.
The building now houses the Carlo Bonetta Library and a Historical Civic Archive, both accessible from the entrance at Via Malaspina 3. Visitors should plan ahead as these spaces operate with set hours since they function as public cultural institutions.
The entrance design creates a tunnel effect that draws the eye through five arches before reaching a stone staircase that connects to the upper rooms. This staircase opens onto views of the Malaspina Gardens beyond, creating a visual flow from street to garden.
