Old Campus of the University of Pavia, Neoclassical university building in central Pavia, Italy.
The Old Campus of the University of Pavia is a neoclassical structure with several courtyards and multiple lecture halls arranged within interconnected building wings. Today it houses university faculties, administrative offices, and study spaces along with a history museum.
The building was donated by Ludovico il Moro in 1485 and received its current appearance through major renovations in the 18th century under architect Giuseppe Piermarini. Those transformations established the neoclassical character that defines it today.
The University History Museum inside displays objects from scientists Alessandro Volta and Lazzaro Spallanzani who worked here. Visitors can see how their research shaped scientific thinking in this region.
The building is centrally located in Pavia and easily reached on foot from other historical sites. Keep in mind this is an active university building, so some areas may not be open to the public at all times.
The interior ceilings feature ornate wooden panels decorated with angel figures and terracotta elements bearing Sforza family crests. Roman artifacts are also built into the structure itself, revealing how later construction layers were added over earlier foundations.
