Barriera Garibaldi, Monumental gateway in Livorno, Italy.
The Barriera Garibaldi features two symmetrical buildings with rectangular openings and a semicircular thermal-style window on the external facade.
Built in 1837 as part of the Leopoldine Walls expansion project, this customs gate marked the entry point from Florence into the free port of Livorno.
An obelisk inside the structure displays epigraphs praising Leopold II of Tuscany for expanding the free port and its benefits to Livorno.
The barrier remained open during night hours, unlike other city gates, with separate buildings for incoming and outgoing goods taxation.
During the 1849 Austrian siege, the control mechanisms and adjacent walls suffered damage, leading to modifications in the structure's defensive capabilities.
