Campocecina, Mountain grassland in Carrara, Italy.
Campocecina is a mountain plateau in the northern Apuan Alps above Carrara, ringed by beech forests and black pine woodlands. The open terrain gives wide views toward the coast and the surrounding mountain ranges.
The name Campocecina may come from the Latin Campus Caesaris, suggested by a stone inscription found in the area and dedicated to Octavius Nero Maior. This points to the area being known and used since Roman times.
The Acquasparta square holds a group of sculptures made during an international symposium in 2001, dedicated to the victims of the Holocaust. The works stand in the open air and can be seen freely, giving the spot a quality that sets it apart from the surrounding grassland.
Campocecina is reachable from Carrara by car along the SS446 mountain road, and clear days make the drive and the stay more rewarding. Those who prefer walking will find marked trails connecting the plateau to the surrounding forest areas.
Campocecina is a known launch point for paragliders and hang gliders who take off toward the coast or into the mountains. The thermal conditions on this plateau are considered very reliable by pilots who return here regularly.
