Castle of Ameglia, Medieval castle in Ameglia, Italy

The Castle of Ameglia is a medieval fortress perched on a hilltop that overlooks the Magra River valley and features stone walls with defensive towers. The structure contains multiple sections showing different construction periods and defensive designs from the medieval era.

The structure was founded in 1174 and initially served as a stronghold for the bishops of Luni. Control of the fortress later passed to Sarzana and then to the Bank of Saint George, reshaping its role and governance.

The fortress served as a defining landmark for the community and shaped how people related to their surroundings for centuries. You can still sense this connection when walking through the village, where the structure anchors the identity of the place.

You can reach the site through Piazza Sforza in the village center, where pathways lead clearly up to the fortification. Tours operate during regular opening hours, so checking ahead ensures you arrive at a time when access is available.

From the fortification you can see both the Apuan Alps and the Magra River valley, which marks the historical boundary separating Tuscany and Liguria. This location explains why controlling this spot mattered so much to different powers throughout the centuries.
