Castello di Borgonovo, Medieval fortress in Borgonovo Val Tidone, Italy.
Castello di Borgonovo is a medieval fortress with a trapezoidal floor plan and three corner towers, positioned on elevated ground overlooking the Val Tidone valley. The structure contains an inner courtyard and several historical rooms that visitors can explore through guided visits.
The original construction dates to around 1150, though the fortress experienced multiple destructions and reconstructions over the centuries. A major attack by Pavesi forces in 1215 left a lasting impact on its architectural development.
The rooms display decorated ceilings and frescoes from the 17th and 18th centuries, showing the artistic tastes of the noble families who lived here over the centuries. These painted walls reveal how the residents expressed their wealth and refinement through art.
Visits are available only through guided tours arranged by Atlante Turismo, which include access to the inner courtyard and historical rooms. It is advisable to book in advance and check opening times, as access is restricted to organized visits.
The castle grounds feature a 1.3-kilometer tree-lined avenue that was created specifically for Maria Luigia d'Austria's visit in 1832. This green passage gives the property an elegant character and connects the fortress to the surrounding landscape.
