Chapel of Filippo Strozzi

Chapel of Filippo Strozzi, Renaissance chapel in Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Italy

The Chapel of Filippo Strozzi is located in the right transept of the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella and features extensive fresco cycles covering both lateral walls. The vault displays four biblical patriarchs, while the walls present narratives of saints rendered in Renaissance painting techniques.

Filippo Strozzi commissioned this chapel in 1486 after obtaining patronage rights, hiring the artist Filippino Lippi to paint the frescoes. This artistic partnership shaped the chapel's appearance and made it a landmark of Florentine Renaissance art.

The chapel bears the name of its patron family, reflecting how wealthy Florentine merchants used sacred art to display their status and devotion. The painted scenes on the walls served as visual sermons for worshippers who could not read, making the stories accessible to everyone in the church.

The chapel sits between the Bardi Chapel and the Tornabuoni Chapel in the right transept and is accessible as part of daily visits to the basilica. Guided tours of the church offer additional context about the artworks and the architectural details you see throughout.

A red porphyry tomb by Benedetto da Maiano holds Filippo Strozzi's remains and features marble reliefs with carved flying angels surrounding it. This elaborate artwork displays masterful Renaissance craftsmanship and stands out distinctly among other tombs of its era.
