Chartreuse de Vigodarzere, Renaissance Carthusian monastery in Vigodarzere, Italy
The Certosa di Vigodarzere features three distinct cloisters, each designed to accommodate different aspects of monastic life within its Renaissance architecture.
Founded in 1534 following the destruction of a previous monastery during the War of the League of Cambrai, the structure was designed by architect Andrea Moroni.
The monastery reflects Carthusian principles through its architectural layout, with separate spaces dedicated to solitary contemplation and communal religious activities.
The monastery complex underwent multiple transformations, serving as a silk factory, summer residence, military barracks, and powder magazine through different periods.
The main cloister intentionally lacks decorative elements to maintain monks' spiritual focus, contrasting with the classical features of the church cloister.
