Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo, Romanesque church in Potenza, Italy
The Chiesa di San Michele Arcangelo is a Romanesque church in Potenza's historic center with a stone facade divided into three sections by four vertical pilasters. The main portal features double jambs and rounded arches.
The original structure dates back to the 5th century, during the time of Bishop Erculenzio and Pope Gelasius I in the region. The building was preserved across the centuries and developed into the Romanesque structure visible today.
The church holds many paintings from the 17th century showing local saints such as Saint Gerard of Potenza and Saint Francis of Paola. These works reveal how the community expressed its religious devotion through art and which figures held special meaning for the people here.
The church sits near Via Pretoria in Potenza's center and is easily reached on foot. It fits well into a walking tour of the historic area, making it simple to combine with other nearby landmarks.
A 5th-century mosaic was discovered beneath the church floor, pointing to its early origins. This find gives visitors a direct glimpse into how long the story of this location truly goes back.
