Palazzo della Provincia

The Palazzo della Provincia is an administrative palace in Potenza featuring a symmetrical facade decorated with rusticated stones, giant pilasters, and Corinthian capitals framing the second-floor windows and balconies. The building sits in the center of Piazza Mario Pagano and continues to serve as the seat of provincial government offices.

The palace suffered severe damage in the 1857 earthquake and was immediately rebuilt, with reconstruction efforts continuing through winter to restore the structure. This rebuilding allowed the building to survive and serve as a symbol of the city's resilience through natural disasters.

The building holds a collection of paintings by southern Italian artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, including portraits by Andrea Petroni. This collection reflects the artistic traditions of the region and remains an important part of the city's cultural heritage.

The building occupies a central location on Piazza Mario Pagano and houses the administrative offices of the Province of Basilicata. Visitors should note that this is an active government building and access may be limited depending on office hours and administrative activities.

A clock on the facade stopped at 19:35 during the 1980 earthquake and remains frozen at that moment to this day. This stopped timepiece has become a silent memorial to the disaster that struck the city.
