Castello di Riva

Castello di Riva is a fortified structure positioned on the right bank of the Nure River, featuring three towers and defensive walls surrounded by a moat. The complex contains multiple rooms and sections that visitors can explore and study.

The castle was first documented in 1199 as a simple fortified portico with defensive walls. Over centuries it evolved into a significant military stronghold under the control of various ruling families.

The structure changed ownership through generations of noble families including the Del Cairo, Anguissola, Farnese, and Sforza Fogliani dynasties.

Parts of the site are now accessible to visitors after recent restoration work opened sections to the public. It is helpful to check in advance which areas can be visited and whether guided tours are available.

The ruler Sigismund of Luxembourg visited the castle in 1412 and held negotiations with local nobility during his stay. This visit represented a significant moment in the region's political history.
