Sant'Agostino Church, Former religious building in historical center of Genoa, Italy

Sant'Agostino is a former church in the heart of Genoa with a striking stone facade decorated with paired windows and horizontal stripes of white marble and blue stone forming a geometric pattern. Inside, sturdy columns topped with cubic capitals and pointed arches divide the space into a central nave and two side aisles.

Construction began in 1260, making it one of the few surviving Gothic structures in Genoa after numerous medieval buildings were demolished during the nineteenth century. Its preservation provides rare evidence of religious architecture from that era in the city.

The former church now hosts performances by the Teatro della Tosse theatre company, transforming it into a creative space for artists and audiences. Its interior with soaring walls creates an unusual setting for live performances that benefit from the distinctive acoustic properties and historical surroundings.

The location is easily accessible within the historic center and convenient to find while exploring the old city. Visitors should note that the building is primarily open during theatre performances hosted by the resident company.

The interior features ogival arches supported by substantial columns topped with distinctive cubic capitals, an architectural detail characteristic of this period and region. This structural arrangement creates an unexpected sense of weight and solidity throughout the space.
