Cima Palon, Mountain summit in Pasubio range, Italy
Cima Palon is the highest peak of the Pasubio mountain range in the pre-Alps, rising to 2,232 meters in the Trentino region. The area is defined by steep slopes and rocky formations marked by mountaineering routes and military fortifications.
The mountain served as a strategic defense position during World War I when Italian troops carved extensive tunnel systems into the rock. This infrastructure was needed to protect supply routes along the Alpine front.
The mountain preserves numerous trenches and military structures that show how strategic this location was during World War I on the Italian Alpine front.
Access requires mountaineering experience and proper equipment, especially over uneven terrain. From October through May, snow and harsh weather make the mountain inaccessible to most visitors.
The Strada delle 52 Gallerie is a remarkable work of military engineering created in 1917 that connects the mountain base to the summit through 52 tunnels carved into stone. This network still shows the extraordinary effort needed to build the mountain defense line.
