Tagliata Bariola

Tagliata Bariola, Military fortress in Valli del Pasubio, Italy.

Tagliata Bariola is a military fortress located in Valli del Pasubio at 650 meters elevation along State Road 46, built with a two-level casemate structure. The lower section sits beneath road level and is integrated into the mountainside with stone masonry.

This fortress was built in 1880 to control passage through the Pian delle Fugazze mountain pass and serve as a key defensive position. It was equipped with multiple cannons and machine guns to defend the mountain route effectively.

This military structure reflects Italian engineering practices from the late 1800s and shows how defensive needs shaped construction methods. It demonstrates the practical choices made to integrate fortifications into a mountain pass environment.

You can access the interior through a window on the left side of the façade, where a small basin and metal staircase lead to lower levels. The spaces inside are compact, so move carefully as the passages and stairs can be narrow and steep.

This structure merges so seamlessly with the road and landscape that many travelers pass by without noticing it exists. The fortification becomes nearly invisible to the untrained eye, making it a hidden spot for those who watch carefully.
