Military shrine of Valli del Pasubio, Military monument and cemetery in Valli del Pasubio, Italy
The Military Shrine of Valli del Pasubio is a stone monument rising 35 meters (115 feet) that holds the remains of approximately 5,000 soldiers from World War I. The structure combines the functions of cemetery, museum, and viewing platform all in one facility.
The shrine opened in 1926 to honor Italian soldiers who died during mountain battles on Monte Pasubio. Architect Ferruccio Chemello designed the facility as a lasting memorial to those who fell in these high-altitude campaigns.
The shrine serves as a place where visitors can read names and stories of fallen soldiers carved into stone walls. It functions as a quiet meeting point for families and a space to reflect on the sacrifices made during mountain warfare.
Access is provided via marked pathways with informational panels explaining the military campaigns and the fallen soldiers. The elevated location naturally offers views across the territories where the historical battles took place.
The building was designed so that it presents different visual impressions from various angles and incorporates the surrounding landscape. These shifts in perspective make each visit a different experience depending on which approach you take to the monument.
