Strada of 52 Gallerie, Military mountain trail in Pasubio, Italy
The Strada delle 52 Gallerie is a hiking trail in the Pasubio massif in Italy, stretching 6.5 kilometers and incorporating 52 tunnels carved into solid rock between 1,216 and 1,934 meters in elevation. The tunnels alternate with open sections that offer views over the surrounding alpine valleys.
The Italian Army built this supply route between February and November 1917 through the 33rd Miners Company to transport material and soldiers beyond the reach of Austro-Hungarian artillery. Construction took place under difficult conditions on the steep slopes during the First World War.
Each numbered passage carries its own name, recalling military figures and leaders such as Tunnel Zappa, Tunnel D'Havet, and Tunnel Re Vittorio Emanuele III. The naming reflects the military importance this route held during the First World War.
The circuit takes roughly 5 hours, covers 17 kilometers, and includes 900 meters of elevation gain, with parking available at Passo Xomo. A flashlight is essential for the darker sections inside the tunnels.
Tunnel 19, at 320 meters, is the longest passage and follows a spiral course inside the mountain, while Tunnel 20 traces a corkscrew pattern through the rock. Both tunnels show the technical complexity needed to penetrate the steep rock face.
