Circolo di conversazione, Neoclassical house in Ragusa, Italy.
The Circolo di Conversazione is a neoclassical building on Piazza del Duomo in the Ibla district of Ragusa, Sicily. Its facade has six fluted Doric pilasters and a decorated cornice, while the interior holds reading and gaming rooms as well as a private garden.
The building was constructed around 1850 as a gathering place for the local aristocracy, who met there for intellectual discussion and social events. Its founding reflects the role of a class that expressed its standing through education and culture.
The ballroom ceiling is covered with frescoes showing arts and sciences, along with portraits of well-known artists. These paintings reflect the tastes of the local nobility and still define how the room feels today.
The building stands directly on Piazza del Duomo and is easy to reach on foot from the center of the Ibla district. As it functions as a private club, access for visitors may be limited, so it is worth checking in advance.
Inside the club, a copper chandelier shaped like a pumpkin hangs above red damask sofas, flanked by four large gilded mirrors. This combination of shapes and materials is rarely found in other buildings of the same period in the region.
