Gesù e Maria Complex, Baroque monastic complex in Pontecorvo district, Naples, Italy.
The Gesù e Maria Complex is a baroque monastic ensemble in the Pontecorvo district comprising a church with twin bell towers and an adjoining cloister building. The monastic structure was later repurposed as a hospital, which continues to operate within its walls today.
Dominican friar Silvio d'Atripalda founded the complex in 1580 on land granted by Ascanio Coppola. Architect Domenico Fontana redesigned the ensemble 5 years later, shaping its current baroque character.
The name reflects the veneration of Jesus and Mary, two figures central to Naples religious life. The church served as a space where this devotion was expressed through artworks by prominent local painters.
The monastic wing operates as a functioning hospital and is not open to visitors. The church has remained closed since 1979 due to structural concerns, making it inaccessible for viewing.
In 1895 the hospital within the complex established the Blue Cross School, one of the first professional nursing institutions in Italy. This school played a key role in establishing nursing as a recognized profession within the country.
