Montes de la Maddalena, Mountain summit in Basilicata, Italy.
The Montes de la Maddalena is a mountain chain in Basilicata with multiple peaks at varying elevations. The highest point, Monte Volturino, rises to about 1,836 feet (559 meters), while nearby summits like Monte Pierfaone and Monte Arioso stand somewhat lower.
The range was partly incorporated into the Appennino Lucano Val d'Agri Lagonegrese National Park in 2007. This protection marked an important step in preserving the area's natural character.
The mountain chain separates distinct valleys and shapes how people in the surrounding communities relate to their land. Hikers and local residents use these slopes regularly, forming a direct connection to this part of the Apennines.
Several marked trails lead to the different peaks across the range. The routes vary in difficulty, so it is best to choose your path based on fitness level and how much time you have.
The rock formations consist of compact limestone and Lower Cretaceous deposits. This composition is the result of millions of years of geological development in the region.
