Bridge over the Basento river, Reinforced concrete bridge in Potenza, Italy
The Bridge over the Basento River is a reinforced concrete structure in Potenza that spans approximately 560 meters across the river valley. It features four arches and carries both vehicle traffic on the upper level and pedestrian paths below.
Engineer Sergio Musmeci designed and built the bridge between 1971 and 1976 to connect Potenza's city center with southern roads. It became an important transportation link for the Basilicata region.
The Italian Ministry of Heritage and Culture designated this structure as a monument of cultural interest in 2003, with documentation stored at the MAXXI museum in Rome.
The bridge is accessible by car and on foot, with separate paths for each type of traffic. Daytime visits work well for viewing the structure and the valley views below.
The bridge employs double-curved mathematical surfaces to minimize concrete while maintaining strength. This innovative approach makes it an example of efficient structural design that uses less material than traditional methods.
