Colfiorito, frazione in Foligno, Italy
Colfiorito is a small mountain community in Foligno situated on a high plateau and surrounded by open fields, forests, and wetlands. Located at around 760 meters (2,500 feet) in elevation, it forms part of a protected area that features seven karst basins, a significant marsh, and remains from the ancient Roman town of Plestia with its original streets, forum, and temple.
Settlement dates back to Roman times when the area was called Plestia and functioned as an important town with a forum and temple. In the medieval period, a castle was built around 1269 as part of a network of fortifications on surrounding hills, including a stronghold on Monte Orve.
The name Colfiorito refers to the high plateau where the community sits, reflecting its geography and elevation. Today, the village is known for growing red potatoes and lentils at high altitude, traditions that are celebrated through seasonal festivals where locals and visitors gather to share food and customs.
The best time to visit is in spring or early autumn when weather is mild and walking trails are easily accessible. Bring proper footwear, water, and a camera, and visit the small Archaeology Museum which displays the region's history and provides maps for exploring the pathways throughout the area.
The area once had a completely different climate - fossils of hippos and bears found here show that this highland supported very different wildlife long ago. These discoveries reveal how dramatically the landscape has changed over thousands of years.
