Forte Monteratti

Forte Monteratti is a fortification in Genoa situated at approximately 560 meters above sea level on the ridge between the Quezzi and Bavari districts. The structure extends roughly 250 meters along the hilltop and consists of thick walls, bastions, and defensive structures built according to the military architecture standards of the 1800s.

The fortification was built between 1831 and 1842 under the rule of the House of Savoy, incorporating an already existing tower on Monte Ratti. Its construction served to defend the peak against potential invasions and formed part of a broader defensive network protecting the city.

The fort represents a key element in the network of Genoese fortifications, reflecting the military architecture and defense strategies of 19th-century Italy.

Access to the fort is via an original cobblestone military road that remains walkable despite poor maintenance and deteriorated conditions. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and be aware of limited safety measures, as the structure shows significant age and decay.

During World War I the site held Austrian prisoners, then later served as an anti-aircraft position during World War II. This shift in use reflects how the location's military importance changed across different conflicts in the twentieth century.
