Forte di Pietole, Military fort in Pietole, Italy

The fort features an asymmetrical crown design overlooking a central parade ground with a moat system connected to the Mincio River waters.

French General Francois de Chasseloup-Laubat designed the fortification in 1802 to protect Mantua from southern attacks through the Paiolo valley.

The fort stands on the former site of Andes, birthplace of the Roman poet Virgil, where a Romanesque church and houses existed before the Napoleonic period.

Located within an 82-acre lowland forest, the site contains multiple paths for exploring local flora and learning about the Mincio River ecosystem.

The structure includes a museum with videomapping displays that showcase the fort's evolution and exhibits Roman artifacts discovered during local excavations.
