Volterraio Fortress, Medieval castle in Portoferraio, Italy.

Volterraio Fortress is a hexagonal fortress on Elba Island that rises about 395 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea and is surrounded by defensive walls. The structure includes a quadrangular tower and was designed to control the coast and the waters below.

The fortress was reinforced by the Maritime Republic of Pisa in 1231 under the direction of architect Vanni Gherardo Rau, who enhanced its defensive capabilities. The location played a key role in securing sea routes and commerce in the region at that time.

The fortress now functions as a military museum, displaying objects that show how strategically important this island was over many centuries. Visitors can explore the artifacts and documents on display to understand the role this place played in controlling the sea.

The climb to the fortress is steep and requires sturdy footwear and physical effort, so you should allow plenty of time for the ascent. It is best to check conditions in advance and plan how you will reach the fortress.

The fortress withstood a Turkish attack in 1544 and proved its strength against invaders from the Mediterranean. The original signal system connecting different watchtowers along the Tuscan coast showed the advanced communication methods of that era.
